How to make lasting memories with your family!

Aug 08,2019

Bills, deadlines, sleep deprivation…three things that make our stomachs churn with anxiety. You are a hard-working and busy adult! Although the stress can begin to pile up, one thing that will stand the test of time is spending family time together.  Spending time with the ones we love most has many health benefits. From confidence building to establishing an unbreakable connection and bond, by taking time out of your busy schedule to spend with family, you are not only growing closer but establishing health benefiting habits that will contribute to your overall long-term health. While you are busy planning your kids’ schedules, making all your meetings and being the #boss that you are, here are some tips to keep in mind that will contribute to making lasting memories with your family!

  1. Be intentional

This is arguably one of the most important pieces of advice. Anybody can plan “just because they can.” For the memories that will make the most impact, take time to go the extra mile to ensure all the finer details are in order. The more time and effort you put in, the better the outcome. Your family will appreciate the effort and you will be beaming with pride when you see just how much fun they are all having.

  1. Take turns deciding how you’ll spend time together

We all know how important it is to allow children to celebrate their independence by allowing them to make their own decisions. This same rule applies to each of your family members. When deciding how to spend time together making memories, allow each person in your family to put their two cents in by deciding how they think the family should spend their time making memories. A fun suggestion would be to rotate through each of the members of your family and allow them to call the shots when it is their turn.

  1. Exaggerate and celebrate the “small” things

The small victories we accomplish are the steps to our big goals. Whether you are celebrating your son achieving a gold star on his assignment or celebrating your wife for achieving a project at work, take the time to celebrate these small (but large) things. This shows your family that you are invested in their success and are actively routing for their achievements. These things may seem small to others but most of the time they are a big deal to the person who is working to achieve them.

  1. Highlight the victories and help them through their times of need

There will be good days and bad days. It is our job as family members to be there through every step of the way. There will be times where we are at our lowest points and times where we reach our highest peaks. One of the best ways to bond with your family members is to establish a place of safety and comfort.  A place where each of your family members can celebrate their successes and be consoled during their times of need.

  1. Experience new activities together

Experiencing a new adventure is a great way to heighten the senses and make lasting memories. Doing this with family is a great way to create a lasting impact. Some ways to do this are to establish goals together as a family and work toward them together, try new restaurants, see new places together or simply shake up your weekly routine with something new!
